Designed the experience for Crossbeam's flagship partnerships conference, from stage to swag.

The Role | Event Designer

Over my extensive career I have done plenty of event design, usually booths or banners, but Supernode was an entirly new beast. Each event design project has an opportunity to transform a vision into a tangible and immersive experience. It starts with an in-depth understanding of the client's objectives, brand identity, and target audience. This knowledge becomes the foundation upon which every design decision is made. From conceptualizing layouts to selecting color schemes and curating decor elements, each aspect is meticulously chosen to align with the event's theme and purpose. Whether it's an elegant gala, an engaging conference, or an interactive product launch, I strive to craft an environment that captivates attendees and leaves a lasting impression, ensuring the event's success in every aspect.

The Challenge

At Crossbeam, we envisioned a grand undertaking — a flagship in-person conference dedicated to Ecosystem-Led Companies & Teams. This ambitious project stands as a testament to the pinnacle of my event design journey during my tenure at Crossbeam. It wasn't merely an event; it was a confluence of creativity, strategy, and meticulous planning. From the initial brainstorming sessions to the final execution, every step demanded the full extent of my creative faculties. The challenge wasn't just in curating an unforgettable experience but in crafting an environment that resonated with the very essence of Ecosystem-Led growth, reflecting the innovative spirit and collaboration that characterizes this industry.

Event Branding

In my role as a brand designer for this event, I was entrusted with the crucial task of crafting its initial branding. The challenge was to encapsulate the event's essence in a visual identity that would not only stand out but also resonate with our target audience. We envisioned a departure from the conventional conference atmosphere, opting for a persona that embodied vibrancy and excitement rather than the typical corporate ambiance.

To achieve this, we delved into a palette of bright, energetic colors and dynamic design elements. The objective was to ensure that every visual aspect mirrored Crossbeam's identity — a brand known for its innovation, collaboration, and approachability. The resulting branding exuded a sense of approachable sophistication, inviting attendees into an environment where creativity and collaboration knew no bounds. It set the tone for what lay ahead — an event that was not only informative and engaging but also an absolute celebration of the Ecosystem-Led community, characterized by its diverse and vibrant personalities coming together under one roof. We spent several months fine tuning till everyone was happy.

What stuck

As we build this out if felt like it needed to be smoother and more approachable with a funky vibe. The stakeholders and myself ended up going with this would fit all the perimeters we were looking for.

Digital Ads

With the branding firmly established, our focus shifted seamlessly to crafting captivating digital ads and promotional strategies for the event. We understood that an exceptional concept alone wouldn't suffice; we needed to translate our innovative ideas into tangible excitement that would resonate with our audience and drive ticket sales.

Our approach was multifaceted. We leveraged the vibrant visual identity we had created to design eye-catching digital advertisements that would immediately catch the attention of potential attendees. These ads were strategically placed across various online platforms, ensuring maximum visibility within our target demographic. Concurrently, we harnessed the power of engaging content — from thought-provoking teasers to in-depth blog posts — to create a buzz around the event, giving people a taste of what awaited them. This integrated strategy was designed to convert interest into action, prompting individuals to not only consider attending but also to swiftly secure their tickets.

It was a challenging yet exhilarating journey, as we continually refined our approach based on real-time data and feedback. The ultimate goal was to ensure that our event, from its branding to its marketing, left a lasting impression on all who encountered it.

Event Design

The stage was set, quite literally. With a successful branding campaign and tickets steadily being snapped up, the challenge now pivoted to bringing our envisioned event to life. We aimed to do more than just host a gathering; we wanted to craft an experience that would remain etched in the memories of attendees.

From the layout of the event space to the choice of decor, every decision was guided by this vision. We carefully curated a blend of contemporary design elements and retro aesthetics, paying homage to the city's unique cultural heritage. The vibrant energy of the event was to be complemented by funky accents and a playful ambiance, encouraging attendees to let loose and fully immerse themselves in the experience. Custom typography I created was placed on banners and signs, conveying messages like 'Take it Easy' and 'You're doing great,' ensuring that visitors knew we wanted them to enjoy their time there.

The Event

With all the pieces in place, it was time for the grand reveal. The vision that had been meticulously crafted in boardrooms and on my computer screen was now a living, breathing entity. The event had materialized, and it was a sight to behold. As we watched our brainstormed ideas take shape in the form of vibrant booths, interactive installations, and an atmosphere buzzing with excitement, we knew we were onto something extraordinary.

Yet, in the grand scheme of things, it was the audience's verdict that would be the true litmus test of our success. We eagerly awaited their response; our meticulous planning and creative endeavors had paid off. With a staggering 90%+ satisfaction rate, the event was a resounding success.

What's next?

With one successful event under our belt, Crossbeam was invigorated to take another crack at orchestrating an exceptional gathering. Armed with the perfected branding we had developed, we shifted our focus to customizing the design to suit the specific location. This time, we chose the sunny shores of San Diego, envisioning an event infused with the city's warmth and camaraderie.

The transition from Philly to the coastal charm of San Diego marked a significant shift in not just the location but also the overall ambiance we aimed to create. We sought to infuse the event with the relaxed and vibrant essence that the city is known for. The change in scenery added a new layer of excitement and enthusiasm, resonating with attendees and creating an unforgettable experience.

Supernode Evolving

Changing our event venue prompted a reevaluation of the aesthetic we wanted to achieve. We envisioned infusing a lively summer vibe with an abundance of personality. San Diego, with its sunny and cheerful atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for inspiration. However, there was one specific directive from our Content Manager: no palm trees.

With this in mind, I eagerly embarked on the task of creating a vibrant and engaging brand that encapsulated the essence of a fun-filled summer event. This new brand needed to resonate with our audience through various channels, from captivating ads and dynamic decks to eye-catching merchandise and lively booth designs. I even designed a line of sunglasses, adding a personal touch to the event experience.

Merch and Event Design

Every element had to play off the calif vibe. I ended up going with some simple merch that I hoped would do well and it was sold out on the first day of the conference.

Key Takeaways

Bringing both events to life was a considerable undertaking, especially considering they were a year apart and we had infused an array of creative ideas into the first drafts of both. Maintaining a cohesive aesthetic across two events with distinct timelines and visions was a notable challenge. Yet, it was a challenge I gladly embraced.

Throughout the process, from the initial brainstorming sessions to the final executions, I found immense pleasure in the work. Despite the workload being substantial, the satisfaction of seeing the entire vision materialize made every effort worthwhile. Witnessing how all the diverse ideas seamlessly blended together into an aesthetically pleasing and cohesive event was incredibly rewarding.
